Writers Conference

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to attend a writers conference, and much like another bigger, and more popular conference in Utah, we sat and listened to speakers who educated us on what to do, and what not to do, offering funny anecdotes here and there in an attempt to keep us interested. In some cases, this attempt was futile, but there were plenty that offered good if not SCARY information.

Let me explain: For the longest time my dream of writing included three things. A pen, some paper, and a really diligent agent. Sometimes, it also included a remote tropical island, and a beautiful women, but I'm a realist so lets stick with the facts. I wasn't going to be able to sit back write a novel and collect a check. According to one published author at the conference, those days are over. Now days a writer is very much involved in the marketing of their book, going to book signings, conferences, creating a web presence, blogging, readings etc... there doesn't seem to be much time left to write, which was the dream in the first place if you remember.

I guess I need to just suck it up and find ways to get it done.

Don't forgo the island and beautiful woman portion of the dream. You might just need to bust your butt for those first few years before the chillin' begins. It'll happen.

Man, this info hit me in the face with a ton of bricks. I think my ego is still sporting the bruises from it. However, I do think it is improving my craft to realize that it isn't hanging out with a hot guy at a day spa (hahaha...my dream versus yours). It is HARD work. I also think the blog is giving me a way to practice my writing without as high of stakes. I guess it's just finding the balance that is hard for those of us who are novice writers.
